Sunderstorm Acquires Nevada’s Abide Brands

Sunderstorm has acquired Nevada-based Abide Brands, maker of Bounti Vapes. Our first-ever company acquisition signals a new phase of growth that will include expanding our categories nationally.

Sunderstorm, which started 2023 with one of its best quarters to date, continues to enjoy sales growth built on a foundation of great systems, automation, products and team building. These investments in ready-to-scale infrastructure put the company in a position to accelerate growth, and we initiated our expansion phase with the acquisition of Abide Brands, a respected vape company with a reputation for quality products and talented leadership.

“We’ve built this machine to scale and last, and we’re ready to leverage it for future growth,” says Cameron Clarke, Co-Founder and CEO of Sunderstorm. “By bringing Abide Brands into the fold, we’re adding a new product category and accomplished team members to our expanding Nevada presence. This is the first of more big moves to come.”

Nevada represents a billion dollar cannabis market that’s widely expected to grow in coming years. We have a strong presence in the Nevada market with KANHA, our award-winning premium gummies brand, and Abide Brands will add to its statewide market share.

Sunderstorm Ranks No. 319 on the Inc. 5000

Sunderstorm is one of the fast-growing private companies in the U.S., says Inc. magazine in its annual ranking of the top independent businesses. The company experienced 1,400-percent growth in the previous three years, securing Sunderstorm the No. 319 spot on the 2021 Inc. 5000 list.

“This is a tremendous milestone for Sunderstorm,” said Cameron Clarke, Co-Founder and CEO of Sunderstorm. “We have made it our mission to deliver the most dependable and compelling products in the cannabis market, and this accomplishment exemplifies the efforts of the entire Sunderstorm staff who invested their diverse talents into building a truly sophisticated cannabis brand.”

Sunderstorm joins brands like Intuit, Zappos, Under Armour, Microsoft and Patagonia that gained national exposure as honorees on previous Inc. 5000 lists.

Contributing to a banner year for the company in 2021, Sunderstorm received recognition from the American Business Awards for becoming the first cannabis company to partner with Max (HBO Max at the time). A joint-marketing campaign for the animated series Close Enough featured four custom KANHA-branded gummy products that reflected the personalities of each main character. “The 2021 Inc. 5000 list feels like one of the most important rosters of companies ever compiled,” says Scott Omelianuk, Editor-in-Chief of Inc. “Building one of the fastest-growing companies in America in any year is a remarkable achievement. Building one in the crisis we’ve lived through is just plain amazing.”

MG Magazine Calls Sunderstorm One of the Best Places to Work

Each year, MG Magazine compiles a list of the Top Cannabis Employers, and the 2022 list included Sunderstorm as one of the best.

“Sunderstorm employees describe their pet-friendly workplace as a meritocracy in which hard work is rewarded,” wrote the magazine. “A whopping 90 percent of them express satisfaction with the culture, applying descriptors like ‘inspiring’ and ‘engaging’ – due, at least in part, to morale-boosting activities like luncheons with games and prizes. A formal DEI policy incorporates sections about work-life balance, bullying, mental health, and trans inclusion. The company financially supports organizations tackling environmental challenges, gender- and ethnic-identity bias, justice reform, and compassionate care for veterans.”

To create the list, the magazine staff and a team of advisors analyze company incentives, benefits, philanthropic initiatives, corporate culture and private employee reports. The goal is to highlight cannabis companies that invest in employees and communities in addition to the business itself.

We are honored to be included on this important list.

Exploring Cannabinoids in the Future of Medicine

By Cameron Clarke

Only five years have passed since the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) definitively recognized “Marijuana as Medicine” on its website. Most Americans already knew it was, but this admission marked a pivotal turning point for what was once an avidly anti-cannabis agency. NIDA has funded numerous clinical studies into medical cannabis since the 2017 admission, essentially changing its research stance from roadblocks to roadways, with proper research starting to accelerate. We’ve made a big leap forward in the past five years, but medical cannabis is positioned for significantly more progress by 2027.

This health and wellness transformation is the topic at hand when I join three other panelists for “Exploring Cannabinoids in the Future of Medicine” at South by Southwest (SXSW) on March 14.

Cannabinoids are organic compounds found in cannabis plants, and many like cannabigerol (CBG), cannabidiol (CBD), and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have therapeutic potential in treating conditions like pain, nausea, epilepsy, obesity, wasting disease, addiction, and autoimmune disorders. Cannabis contains more than 100 cannabinoids and terpenes that vary from strain to strain, so the data collected in these large-scale studies can help identify proper dosage, specific cannabinoid targets, and standard treatment regimes. This represents the immediate future of cannabinoid research, but as the big picture comes into focus, cannabinoid medicine appears on the path to many more significant breakthroughs.

Take a look at what we’re doing here at Sunderstorm with more efficient delivery systems. In particular, our Nano edibles feature molecular technology that significantly reduces the size of the cannabinoid particles and then coats them in plant-based material that replicates the natural digestive process. The result is faster activation and the greater absorption of cannabinoids and terpenes, which, for medical use, could make a quantifiable difference in overall efficacy for conditions like chronic pain.

The future also promises more patient-specific cannabinoid medications. Knowing a person’s genetic makeup can inform custom cannabinoid solutions that may produce more positive outcomes. EndoCanna Health, for example, uses its proprietary genotype and endocompatibility test to identify the optimal ratio of cannabinoids and terpenes and then customize the medication accordingly. Len May, the CEO of EndoCanna Health, is another participant on the SXSW panel.

The future starts with a better understanding of cannabinoids and dosage, but it continues with customized therapeutics, advanced delivery systems, and genetic testing that may have medical applications beyond just cannabinoids. It’s these future-minded innovations that we’ll discuss at SXSW’s Exploring Cannabinoids in the Future of Medicine

If you’re in Austin for SXSW, come join the conversation about the future of medicine. Otherwise, watch this space for more information on the latest breakthroughs in cannabinoid science.
